MOORE/COSCO ADDITION

Robin Moore and Nilda Cosco, directors of NCSU's Natural Learning Initiative, were naturally indoor/outdoor people who wanted to connect directly to the outside, more than their home was allowing them to do.  They asked us to design an intermediary space that would allow them to live in their backyard garden throughout the year.

We extended the house with a living room of light,  with a high polygal shed that pops up over the existing house to capture the southern sun. We designed it for optional degrees of enclosure, closing up against winter winds or opening up as a screen porch during summer. Set among the flowers, paths, and rainchains, it provides an inviting space between inside and outside. For Robin and Nilda, who have devoted their work and lives to the love of the out-of-doors, it is just the addition they needed.
